HDMI Cables by Bandwidth

HDMI cables are grouped together under one of four speed or bandwidth categories: Ultra High Speed [8K 48GBPS], Premium High Speed [4K 18GBPS], High Speed [4K 10.2GBPS], and Standard Speed [1080p 4.56GBPS].

8K – 48Gbps

Ultra High Speed cables are the most recently released extreme home theatre & gaming cables now available and offer the greatest visual and audio experience. Ultra High Speed cables have up to 48Gbps bandwidth, allowing for uncompressed 8K video with many additional audio and video features. More importantly for most 4K users, specifically gamers, they can support 4K at 120Hz. This means, if you have a gaming PC or a console capable of pushing 4K speeds greater than 60 frames per second, this type of cable can handle it.

4K – 18Gbps

Premium High Speed pushes the bandwidth up to 18Gbps, which will cover any consumer or commercial level video source. They’re the most common HDMI cable being used. Premium High Speed cables support 4K60, or 4K video at 60 frames per second, with the capacity for BT.2020 Color space and 4:4:4 chroma sampling.

4K – 10.2Gbps

High Speed has a minimum bandwidth of 10.2Gbps. Most new HDMI cables will be High Speed or above, meaning they can carry a 4K signal. The key thing to note is that the bandwidth will only support 4K24, or 4K video at 24 frames per second which is fine for most home entertainment sources like Ultra HD Blu-ray movies and streaming.
